Creating your future

Whether you realise it or not, you are the creator of your own future.

As humans, we have this wonderful thing called the pre-frontal cortex, the part of our brain that gives us the ability to think, plan and imagine. So, we are constantly creating our future based on the imagery and ideas we hold in our mind.

However, most people don’t hold a clear vision of their future. They will say “I don’t know what it looks like because I don’t know what will happen to me”.

They imagine their future as something that happens to them, instead of imaging their future as a possibility - as something they create.

It’s ironic but we don’t want to imagine an amazing future for ourselves because it feels unrealistic to do so, and therefore we keep living from our default and creating more of what we expect, year after year.

Case Study of a Client:

When it comes to creating her own future, one of my clients was finding it hard to choose which future option was right for her. She was grappling with the decision on whether to:

a) stay in her current job and upskill herself towards a promotion OR

b) to side step her career into something related but within a new industry she was really interested in.

She had done the obvious pros and cons list, but she still couldn’t make up her mind.

Each time she started to think about the options, she ended up in a negative spiral of “what if’s” which painted a future based on her current reality.

The exercise we did together on creating her future was valuable.

Instead of imaging the worst-case scenarios that were going through her mind – I asked her to imagine what life would look like if both options led to an amazing future outcome. She imagined herself in her current role, and what amazing would look like in this and compared it to what an amazing future she could create with her second option.

By asking herself: “if both options could create amazing outcomes – which one would I choose?” she was able to gain clarity on the best way forward with optimism and creativity.

You can always make tomorrow better than today. You have that choice.
